Hi everyone. As you may have guessed, I’m Dr. Sam. See my “about me” link for further details.
This is the first of what I hope will be many posts.
This is my first foray into the world of blogging, so please bear with me as I learn the ropes.
My obvious goal with this blog is to reach people.
I’m a practicing physician and find that on an almost daily basis I seem to have less and less time to really discuss issues with my patients. Issues ranging from their specific medical problems to problems in society as a whole.
There is an endless flood of bureaucratic hurdles that get between me and my patients.
This is not just true for me, but for pretty much all doctors these days.
I think this is disastrous.
My goal for this blog is to make up for this somewhat.
There was a time when a doctor truly spent time with patients. Fully heard them out. Gained a better understanding of their situation, and then took some time to truly educate the patient about their medical issues. Further, the doctor and the patient gained more than just some commerce driven relationship. The doctor became a friend, an adviser, an advocate. Patients benefited from this, and so did the doctor. Practicing medicine was less like running a business, and more like having a ministry.
While this website and blog in no way create a patient-physician relationship and should never be read as a substitute to consulting with your own physician, I do hope to use it a vehicle to perhaps say some of the stuff I wish I had more time to say to my patients and to receive feedback from readers that will perhaps make up for some of the feedback I wish my patients had more time to give to me.
So, while reading this blog and exploring this website will in no way make me your doctor and will in no way replace your relationship with your own doctor, perhaps it will help you to be a better informed patient and thus get more out of your visits with your own doctor. Perhaps it will help you to better understand some of the hurried jargon your own doctor uses, or if not, at least help you have a better shot at asking your own doctor the right questions so that he or she can better explain things to you.
I want to discuss recent medical news. I want to discuss specific medical conditions, treatments, etc.
I’ll occasionally go into other topics as well. I may discuss some recent current event, politics, or whatever.
Most likely, for the earlier posts, don’t expect a lot of intricate details. The early posts are likely to be much more philosophical and generalized in nature.
They will be there to allow the readers to sort of get to know me and where I’m coming from.
Think of these early posts as being sort of like a first date or two. You don’t get a lot of detailed info on a first date usually. Instead you just get to know the person and start to get an idea of what makes them tick. Helps you decide if you want to go on another date or not.
Similarly, these early posts will hopefully give folks a feel for this blog and hopefully a few will be encouraged to keep coming back.
Readers here will have the opportunity to participate as well. They will be able to leave comments. Depending on the volume, I’ll likely respond to some of these as appropriate.
Eventually down the road, I’m hoping to give some really good info. As they say on the internet, “Content is King” and I hope to create (with the help of my readers) a lot of great content.
In a nutshell, I want to have that opportunity to connect with people, give some advice and opinions, and hopefully better some folks lives in some small way, and in turn better my own.
In any case, as mentioned, this is my first entry. I know it is a bit rambling and I appreciate anyone who has made it this far.
Please leave any comments, advice, etc you might have.
Thanks, and I hope to see you here soon.
